The orthodontic process, simplified

The benefits of orthodontic treatment are countless. Having straight teeth is not only esthetically pleasing but also integral to our overall heath. A proper bite promotes the longevity of our teeth, it helps us chew better, talk better, and have better access for proper oral hygiene. Getting that beautiful and healthy smile is much easier than you think.

The first step in the exciting journey to straight teeth starts with the initial orthodontic evaluation (which is always free of charge at our office by the way!). During this consultation the nature, cause and severity of the orthodontic problem are identified and various treatments options presented to obtain the best results. Since every bite is unique and every orthodontist has his/her treatment philosophy you may find some variations regarding your treatment options.

Once treatment is approved the next step is to take “Orthodontic Records”. This usually consists of impressions or molds of the teeth, photos, and x-rays. These records are crucial in helping the orthodontist formulate the best and most comprehensive treatment plan. They are also legal records that are the standard of care in most states. If you are having Invisalign treatment an extra set of molds are taken and sent to Invisalign.

After having received the proper clearance by your dentist and cavity free with nice clean teeth you are now ready for the “Bonding visit”. This is the appointment where braces are “bonded” or glued to the teeth and any appliances such as expanders or headgears delivered. For the Invisalign patient this visit usually consists of placing attachments and delivering the first set of aligners.

You have now officially started your orthodontic treatment and will be seen on a monthly basis, also known as the “adjustment visits”, to change the elastic ties, wires, and any other necessary work.

Then, one day soon, will come the long awaited final visit when the braces are removed and retainers delivered. It is by the far the most anticipated and exciting appointment because you finally get to see, feel, and enjoy the fruits of your dedication per se (and your orthodontist’s hard work!)

A specific schedule of retainer appointments will then follow and you will continue to see your orthodontist for periodic retainer checks. And that is pretty much all there is to it. So who is ready to start this exciting journey??
