Braces and Cosmetic Alternatives

Braces can be used to treat a variety of orthodontic problems with the ultimate result being a beautiful, healthy smile. Braces come in a variety of shapes and sizes but the basic design is the metal one we are all familiar with. Metal braces are still the most widely used type of braces. They are usually made of stainless steel, easy to place on the teeth, strong enough to handle the harsh environment of the mouth, and resistant to corrosion and staining.

Even-though very popular and widely used, alternatives to metal braces do exist for patients that want a “metal free” smile. In such cases clear braces can be used. These braces are usually made of porcelain, the same material used in dental crowns. They are very strong, resist staining, and tend to be more comfortable than metal braces. The latest clear braces are made of mono-crystalline sapphire which is extremely translucent, meaning the light goes directly through them. These braces are the most esthetic braces available and are nearly invisible. Clear wires are also available to complement these ultra- clear braces for the esthetically conscious patient. Adults and those in high public presence such as actors and public speakers are ideal candidates for clear braces.

Another alternative to metal braces are “lingual braces”. These braces are placed on the inside of the teeth, toward the palate side on the upper teeth or the tongue side on the bottom teeth. They offer the same advantages of metal braces with the addition of being hidden from view. Some disadvantages of these braces are that they are harder to place and work with, more irritating to the tongue, harder to clean, and more expensive in most cases. However, they are good alternatives to conventional braces.

A final option for an esthetic, metal free smile is clear aligner therapy. Invisalign is the most recognized name of such system. Also known as “invisible braces”, it consists of removable, clear aligners that are worn just like retainers. Since they are removable, they tend to be more comfortable, easier to clean, and more practical in social situations. However, excellent compliance with wear is of outmost importance for successful results with this system.
