Braces and Adults

In our modern society more and more emphasis is placed on looks and appearances. Constant exposure in the media along with greater health awareness has caused an increasing number of adults to seek orthodontic care.

Based on the severity of the case, several treatment options exist for the adult population. The majority of cases seen in our office are those that previously had braces but did not wear retainers and are now seeing the original problem re-occur. Most of the adults in this group do not want a second round of braces and are just looking for some minor cosmetic realignment. This group is ideally treated with Invisalign, which are clear aligners that are worn for a period of time to gradually re-align the teeth back to the ideal position.

For adults who never had orthodontic treatment, braces are often preferred over Invisalign. Treatment in adults is usually more complex and lengthier than in teens because of long standing problems that have worsened over years of neglect and because teeth move generally slower the older one gets. Moreover, with adults we are often dealing with missing teeth, periodontal disease, or health issues that further complicate orthodontic care. To help ease the acceptance of braces we do offer clear braces and wires that are a more esthetic alternative to conventional metal braces.

A recent addition to our office has been Lingual braces. These are braces that are placed on the inside of the teeth and therefore not visible when smiling. They are a great esthetic alternative to conventional braces   for the right adult candidate.

In some cases, when the severity of the orthodontic problem is too great or if correction of the bite cannot be achieved with braces alone, then orthognathic surgery is recommended. Life changing results can be achieved with orthognathic surgery and drastic improvements of one’s profile can be seen. This type of treatment always requires a team approach consisting of an oral surgeon, a dentist, and the orthodontist.

Braces are no longer exclusive to children. More and more adults are now taking advantage of the wonderful, life changing benefits of orthodontic treatment. With various treatment options available and clear, esthetic braces, there are no excuses not to see your orthodontist!
